The paper “Evaluation of the capabilities of satellite imagery acquired in different spectral ranges for the analysis of the Baltic Fleet’s capabilities using digital image processing methods” won the top prize in the 2nd edition of the competition for the best thesis in the field of national security, defense and defense industry.
The author of the thesis is Master Sergeant Cadet Adrian Molenda, who in his study combined modern satellite image processing technologies with strategic analysis. Through a detailed evaluation of electro-optical and radar data and the presentation of their application in the analysis of the potential of the Baltic Fleet stationed in Baltiysk, the work indicates more effective solutions of satellite imagery in the context of image reconnaissance, identification and classification of military objects and assessment of strategic potential.
The work is an example of a comprehensive approach to the analysis of satellite imagery, of crucial importance are the advanced methods of digital processing of satellite data evaluated, including pansharpening, radar filtering and integration of electro-optical (EO) and radar (SAR) imagery.
In order to comprehensively analyze satellite imagery, the author of the paper evaluated the quality of processed images. The study makes reference to both EO and SAR imagery and their processing. Both visual assessment and indicators like ERGAS (Erreur Relative Globale Adimensionalle de Synthèse) or SSIM (Structural Similarity Index Measure) were used for the analysis.
Alioth Foundation is proud to carry out its mission of supporting education, innovation and development in the national security, defense and defense industry. We believe that investing in the development of young talent is key to building a strong and stable future.
