On November 27, 2025, the 25. Air Cavalry Brigade received the first copy of the AW149 helicopter produced in the PZLŚwidnik plant. It is the first helicopter of this generation from the Polish production line, which is an important step in the modernization of the Polish Air Force and the development of the domestic defense industry. So far, Poland has received a total of 11 machines from the manufacturer, the Leonardo concern - the first ten were produced at the Leonardo plant outside Polish, and the eleventh copy was built in plants in Poland. According to the agreement signed in 2022, 32 AW149 helicopters will ultimately be delivered to the Polish army, of which another 21 are to be built in Świdnik by 2029.
The AW149 helicopter is a medium-sized, multi-role machine, designed to meet the requirements of the modern battlefield. It is designed for a wide range of operations, such as transporting troops and equipment, medical evacuation, rescue missions, battlefield support, and serving as an air command post. The machines intended for the Polish Army are to be equipped with modern observation, communication and self-defense systems and, in combat versions, with small arms and guided and unguided missiles.

The introduction of the AW149 into service in Poland is particularly important for several reasons. The modern helicopter significantly strengthens the 25. Air Cavalry Brigade, increasing its mobility and operational capabilities. The machine enables the rapid transport of soldiers and equipment, air support, as well as medical evacuation - which is crucial in the context of modern security challenges. At the same time, the introduction of the AW149 means the modernization of the helicopter fleet - so far, the unit has mainly used older designs, such as the W3 Sokół or Mi8, and also causes a clear technological and operational leap. Production in Poland also brings benefits to the domestic defence industry, developing competences, know-how, service and logistics facilities, which can pay off in subsequent orders and international cooperation. In addition, local production and servicing of helicopters increases Polish's security and sovereignty, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers in the strategic sphere of defense.
According to the contract schedule, by 2029, the delivery is to cover all 32 ordered AW149s. Further machines, assembled in PZLŚwidnik, will gradually be delivered to military units, which will significantly increase the aviation potential of the land forces in the next few years. It will also be crucial to train crews and ground personnel, as well as the development of logistics and service, so that modern equipment can be operated efficiently and effectively.
